This iconic real ale became legendary as soon as it was first brewed in the 1980s. It’s strong, with a rich, malty kick that can sneak up on you—one pint too many and you might end up “horizontal.” It was first brewed in the building that once housed Cooplands Bakery, which became a pub in 1979. That’s where Old Horizontal began its story. In 1995, the brewery was sold and production stopped. For a while, it looked like the end. But in 2018, new owners took over The Hallcross and decided to bring it back. They tracked down the recipe and found a brewer to revive it. Today, Old Horizontal is back where it belongs—alive, kicking, and still packing a punch.
