The world’s oldest classic horse race came about after a private dinner at the Red Lion pub in 1778. When that dinner was over, horse racing was changed forever! Horse races used to be run over three heats, with a 30 minute rest between each heat. The St Ledger changed all that, it was the first ever race to be run in just one heat. Fast forward almost 250 years later and the St Ledger still runs today, making it the world’s oldest classic horse race!
