Fred Trueman, the fast-bowling Yorkshireman with a thunderous run-up and an even sharper wit, grew up in Stainton, near Doncaster, and became a cricketing icon by terrorising batsmen for England in the ’50s and ’60s. Known as “Fiery Fred,” he was as famous for his blunt, no-nonsense Yorkshire humour as for the 307 Test wickets that made him a national hero. To Doncaster folk, he wasn’t just a sporting legend—he was one of their own, a lad who put the town on the cricketing map and proved you can take the man out of Doncaster, but you can’t take Doncaster out of the man.
