Butterscotch is popular around the world; it’s a firm flavour favourite in many desserts and treats. This international superstar was first crafted in Doncaster by confectioner Samuel Parkinson in 1817. Samuel stirred together butter, sugar and treacle to create the golden sweet. It soon became popular and buying a bag of it at the races was a bit like strawberries and cream at Wimbledon. The big moment for Butterscotch was in 1851 when Queen Victoria declared it her favourite. Butterscotch is now a world famous sweet with a lasting legacy forever linked to Doncaster.
